We got back from the honeymoon late Sunday afternoon. That evening was spent with Tara’s family over at my parents’ house opening the wedding gifts. It was a good time. It was very interesting to see what people got us. Overall, we were very happy with the gifts, and we still have tons of giftcards to blow through. We were both amused though, because people kept saying to me how they had been hoping to locate “my gifts” on the registry, but couldn’t find any. There were plenty of them! And I got hardly any! Oh well, that’s what the gift cards are for.
Now I’m going to rant here briefly about the purpose of a gift registry. Before I was married (oh so long ago), I thought the registry was like a guide–for the lazy people that can’t think of a good gift. Thus I would seek out my own gift for the newlyweds. THIS COULD NOT BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH!! In the months before the wedding, the couple spends hours upon hours contemplating how they want their future home to look. They spend long amounts of time at the stores going through the stuff, meticulously choosing and registering for the towels, napkins, placemats, etc that go with their desired “theme”. Bachelor’s, Bachelorette’s, or married people that have forgotten, when you go to the store to buy your wedding gift, and you see that oh-so-tempting bright orange party platter (not on the registry) that you absolutely adore and feel that it will be absolutely perfect in the couple’s new home, you make 2 huge neglections:
1. That item was not on the registry. Therefore, NO ONE ELSE will know that you got it. This means that every wedding attendant that happens to think like you will buy the same damn thing!
2. Just because you like it does not mean that the couple will. Most likely, they’ll be sitting in their new living room completely taken over by boxes wondering where the hell their going to put the 4th mismatched party platter!
Gift Receipt? Who needs gift receipts?
Alright, all ranting done with, I reiterate, that ALL of the gifts were lovely. We greatly enjoyed using them to put our new home together. I only wanted to state that stuff here, with the hopes that some people will read this, and have a new understanding before they buy their next wedding gift.
I promise that we’re working on the thank you cards…
