My parents currently have a foster child in their care named Sheri, who is 8. For school, she sent us a Flat Stanley. I had never heard of this before, but evidently it’s pretty common, and basically consists of the kids coloring paper dolls and sending them to friends/family that live “far” away. The recipients then photograph the doll in a variety of scenes, and send it back with a letter describing what they did with Flat Stanley. The following is the letter I sent to Sheri.
Dear Sheri,
Flat Sheri arrived at our apartment in Salt Lake City, Utah last week. During her visit, we took her on many adventures throughout the Utah Valley.
On Friday, I took Flat Sheri with me to my work, Procerus Technologies, to show her the unmanned airplanes and helicopters we make. She was amazed how they fly themselves like robots. She even got to go for a ride on a helicopter with 6 propellers! Unfortunately, the helicopter crashed and Flat Sheri got a little booboo. She was fine, though, and said that it was totally worth it.

Note (not in actual letter): So what actually happened was we had hastily taped the thing to the bottom of the 6-rotor and taken it outside to fly. Reed was flying it while I took pictures, when suddenly, we had a GPS glitch (a good GPS signal is crucial), and the vehicle jerked forward. Reed maintained control, but one of the doll’s legs flew up into one of the blades and was immediately cut into about 50 pieces. We combed the field, but could not put Flat Sheri back together again. Thus, Tara used a couple Band-Aids to repair the injured leg.
On Saturday, we took Flat Sheri with us up into the Wasatch mountains which are part of the Rocky Mountains in Utah. She got to stay with us at our condo at Snowbird Ski resort. She was amazed it could be so warm down in Salt Lake where we live, but still be cold and snowy way up here in the mountains! She and Tara spent the week relaxing at the spa. We also went hiking together in the pretty snow.
To be clear, we don’t own a condo. We were using one of my parents’ timeshare weeks. They couldn’t use it, and let us use it for Tara’s graduation present. So we spent the week up there, and I drove down to work everyday while Tara relaxed. It was outstanding. Nobody up there this time of year, and we had access to the Spa. Every night we enjoyed the spa’s rooftop pool, hot tub, and steam room. Then we would sit in the solarium (a room with comfy lounge chairs, soothing music, and large windows) wrapped in our towels, sipping the awesome tea they had while the snow fell outside (Snowing, can you believe it?).
We think that Flat Sheri really enjoyed her time with us here in Utah. We’re so glad she could come visit us! We got some really good pictures of her that we’re sending back with her. Hopefully you’ll enjoy them.
Sincerely,
Andrew & Tara
